Why the PNG is usually bigger
JPEG achieves its size by discarding detail; PNG stores every pixel exactly. Converting therefore preserves the already-degraded image faithfully and typically produces a file two to five times larger, sometimes more for photographs. That is expected rather than a fault. The benefit is that further saves no longer compound the loss, which matters if the file will be edited repeatedly.
Transparency and artefacts
JPEG has no alpha channel, so converting to PNG cannot create transparency where none existed. A white background stays white. Compression artefacts already baked into the JPEG — the faint halos around high-contrast edges and the blocky patches in flat areas — are copied exactly into the PNG, because they are now genuinely part of the image data.
